Adrian Dică

Romanian contemporary visual artist based in Bucharest. Work shown at the Royal Academy of Arts in London, the London Art Biennale and institutions across Romania and Europe.

Painting is my response to oblivion.

My artistic practice explores the traces that human existence inscribes into matter, memory, and time. Painting becomes the medium through which I investigate how these traces are preserved, transformed, and revealed.

Metaphor is a central principle of thought within my practice. Painting functions for me as a form of thinking, while the series becomes a method of carrying the same investigation from one work to the next.

I work with oil, acrylic, industrial paints, stains, and pigments, using both conventional and experimental processes. The work develops between construction and deconstruction, where deliberate decisions coexist with controlled accident.

  • SeedsSmall-format paintings, 15×15 cm, oil and acrylic on canvas — the testing ground for texture, color and an abstract expressive language.
  • IntermezzoPaintings in mixed media on canvas, 150×150 cm — a transitional series between a distilled, controlled stage and an emerging visceral direction. 2022–present.
  • Industrial LandscapesPaintings in mixed media on canvas exploring post-industrial landscapes — forms left behind in deindustrialized zones at the city's geographic and cultural center. Variable dimensions, 2017–2021.
  • PreapocalipticFive large-format paintings (150×150 cm) — the body of work developed for the MA thesis at the National University of Arts Bucharest, 2016. Mixed media on canvas: oil, acrylic and stain.
  • WastedSeven oil on canvas paintings exploring abandoned interiors — corridors, rooms and disused industrial spaces. Variable dimensions, 2014–2016.
  • GarbageNine paintings developed for the Bachelor thesis at the Faculty of Painting, National University of Arts Bucharest, 2014. Mixed media on canvas. Awarded the Faculty of Painting Excellence Award, 2014.
